As the writer/filmmaker responsible for the densely-detailed and intense films Donnie Darko and Southland Tales, Richard Kelly returns with another mind-bending sci-fi tale called The Box.
StarWars.com caught up with Kelly after a recent visit to Skywalker Ranch and ILM, to chat with him about his love for Star Wars, NASA's approval of The Box and why Jabba the Hutt should be the next Tony Soprano.
----------------
In addition to expanding on Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button" for the plot, you also use a lot of your own parents' background stories in The Box, especially with your father's work at NASA. Why did you want the film to reflect some of your own family's history?
It just felt like the right thing to do. This felt like the kind of film I think they would appreciate. They love Alfred Hitchcock. When I found the solution to this story, and linking to my dad's work at NASA, it all came together. It felt like a way to kind of pay tribute to them and to their experiences. And that they would get a kick out of seeing elements of who they are portrayed by Cameron Diaz and James Marsden. Obviously, they're not playing my parents but it's an interpretation of them.
You don't get that many opportunities in life to try to do something cool like that for your parents. This felt like the moment to do it.
How did NASA feel about you not only using them as a story component, but actually shooting some footage there as well?
All the NASA stuff at Langley in the film was shot at NASA's Langley Research Center. It took about a year to get full cooperation from NASA and NASA headquarters and everyone at Langley. They all read the script and signed off on it. We signed a Space Act Agreement and it was a big deal.
No one has ever photographed that hangar before; no one has ever been inside that wind tunnel. There are these legendary buildings over at Langley that have never been shown before on film so it was really kind of setting a new precedent to get access to all these facilities.
My dad's work with NASA probably had a lot to do with granting me permission, and that the film might shed some light on the Viking program which was a very significant event. It's not the most well-known space mission, however anyone you talk with at NASA always go back to Viking as one of the greatest achievements in the history of space exploration. Putting a robot on Mars and sending photographs back was a profound accomplishment.
If you go online to the website YouAreTheExperiment.com you can see some of these prequel videos I put together. The first one incorporates a lot of real footage of the real scientists on the day -- June 20, 1976 -- responding and reacting to photographs being transmitted back.

( Video of Sanjay with Stephen Colbert.........Zombies are actually a good example because they are sort of in this state between life and death. )
Sanjay Gupta (@Sanjayguptacnn), Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN, spoke to Stephen Colbert about his new book, Cheating Death.
He explained that there's more gray area between life and death than we normally think. Since it's not as easy to pinpoint the moment of death it gives doctors more chances to intervene, to "cheat death."
Is it a useful book in furthering the discussion of a taboo subject, or another doctor attempting to deny the reality we all face?

Variety reports that Screen Gems has acquired "Sheneneh and Wanda," a comic vehicle for Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence to star in. The duo would play female characters they developed during their stand up comedy days in the caper film.
Foxx will write the script and he and Martin will produce together through Foxx's Foxxhole and Lawrence's Runteldat production companies.
The project originated as a parody of a movie trailer for a film called "Skank Robbers," which Foxx and Lawrence made for the BET Awards. The reaction was strong enough that the duo decided to turn the concept into a real film.
In the comedy, Sheneneh and Wanda are modern day independent women trying to make it on their own, one bank robbery at a time.

LOL FOREVER if this really happens, even though I will watch the hell out of it. Here's the "Skank Robbers" parody for those who haven't seen it.
I finished reading the Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky yesterday. It was a really...emotional book. I'm not quite sure if it's one of those books that I'd classify under favourites or love, but it was a very good book. It's very similar to Catcher in the Rye and I'm still not quite sure where I stand with that book either. It makes you all sad and melancholic but the end of the book gives you some hope but uncertainty about the future...it kinda just leaves you the way you wish it wouldn't. I'm not sure anyone will understand what I am trying to say, haha.
( No chance, no way, I won't say it. )
Nothing else really to say. I mean, there are, but I really shouldn't write about them on Lj.
I can't even admit them to myself.

Dove Chocolate and Martha Stewart have partnered for a line of special edition Dove Promises chocolates. The chocolates, which feature holiday messages from Stewart, will be promoted in-store and across Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia platforms, including The Martha Stewart Show and the Martha Stewart Living and Everyday Food magazines.
The special edition bags of dark chocolates, almond and caramel, as well as a limited edition Peppermint Bark, will include some 200 unique holiday tips under their foil wrappers. The messages—such as “Cut marshmallows into shapes to serve in hot cocoa”—are drawn from 17 years of December issues of Martha Stewart Living magazine. The suggested retail price for the bags of chocolates is $4.49

The chocolates will be promoted during the traditionally big sales periods for Dove—namely between now and December 31, and January to February 2010 for Valentine’s Day.
“We’re always asking ‘how can we amplify these occasions?’” said Ryan Bowling, a rep for Mars Snackfood US, which owns the Dove brand. “What better way than to use a voice like Martha Stewart’s, who is known for creativity around these holidays?”

After being a guest on almost every late-night talk show, George Lopez enters the fray as host of “Lopez Tonight,” premiering Monday night on TBS.
Anyone who has watched TBS recently no doubt has seen the commercial with President Obama telling Lopez that his show is “change I can believe in.”
“He was really funny because he played it really dry,” Lopez said in a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles. The bit was filmed while Obama was still a candidate.
Lopez spent time on the campaign trail stumping for the future president and realized there that the time was right to host a talk show.
“I would see the people that were coming out and the hopefulness of those people and seeing how they related to me,” he said. “And knowing that late-night TV was in a bit of decline, I thought that there was an opportunity for something to happen like it happened 20 years before with Arsenio Hall.
“I did ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ 16 times in five years, so I saw what that inclusive party format looked liked.”
The comedian hopes to bring a similar format back to late-night.
“I don’t just want to do good. I really want to wreck it every night,” he said. “I want to destroy it. I think there is a place to be inclusive, a place to be relaxed, a place to be funny and a place to be spontaneous.”
That means no desk and no pre-show interview. Sometimes members of the audience will ask the guests questions. Ellen DeGeneres, Eva Longoria-Parker and Kobe Bryant will join Lopez for the premiere.
“I’ve been on all the sides of (talk shows),” he said. “But what I didn’t like is the pre-interview that (felt) like you were being interrogated for something that was going to last seven minutes. Jimmy Kimmel was really great at being loose. When you did Leno, you had to stay on point from the first question to the second question to the third question.”
Lopez also brings diversity to a field dominated by white men.
“I think you lead by example. I’ll show (viewers) what America really looks like. They might not see it every day, but they’ll see it here. And maybe in things that we say, in things that we do, it will open people’s eyes to what is already out there, which is just a different color of a world.”
